I'm an Avid person myself. I've used Premiere and played with FinalCut, but despite their flexibility, I think they're not very efficient. Avid Media Composer, Xpress, etc. are stable and when I use them, I don't feel like I'm wearing mittens.

I wish Avid had Premiere's ability to nest sequences and retain sound when the speed of video is changed. But otherwise it rules!

Explain your preference in a reply.

i have seen people working with the other systems, and i do hate mac computers, but i actually wound up liking what i saw in final cut and wanted to learn on that system. it just so happens the place i went to school also uses it, so i got the chance to learn it that i wanted and decided it was right for me... if 7 is what they boast it to be it will be even better. but i will admit i have not heavily used other editing software and the ones i have tried have been demo versions or friends consumer versions.

I first started cutting on Avid, which was great, but cost me (a young film student at the time) an arm an a leg to rent an editing suite, as our school didn't have any non-linear editing facilities. Looking into getting an avid system for home use I was shocked to discover that it would cost about 4 billion dollars to get the Avid software AND hardware needed to be able to do any cutting at home. Forget that...

Then I got a friend to get me a copy of Final Cut Pro - sure, my first copy of final cut was pirated... but how else was I, a young nobody with no cash (or editing experience necessary to get work as an editor), supposed to learn how to use it? (eventually I purchased later copies) I was surprised to find that it basically operates exactly like Avid in terms of interface, and really, you just needed to familiarize yourself with the keyboard shortcuts and tools specific to that program. I've never looked back.

Never used premiere, but I've seen it in action. Looks very much like FC or Avid also. leads me to believe that all editing software is the same in terms of basic functionality, but of course each program's gonna have it's quirks. Depends on what your output is and how much time you wanna spend waiting for stuff to render, I guess... But for my money and experience Final Cut is where it's at.
