Dane was born in South Africa and immigrated to New Zealand at 9 years old with his family. He has been fascinated with art, animation and movement since an early age. after discovering alternative electronic music such as Aphex Twin and Orbital at 15, he began composing, meticulously cutting together sound clips in rudimentary sound editing software. He continued to draw original works and create music throughout his school years, and after bursary spent a year creating (but not finishing) an original 2D videogame, constructing a story, art and soundtrack.
From 2004-2006, he completed a diploma in classical animation at the Freelance Animation School in Auckland, and was pitching his idea of starting an animation studio to several classmates from the beginning of his first year.
Late 2005 saw his first filmic collaboration, partnering with Jeremy to write, direct and act in a bizarre, 20-minute live action short surrounding a haunted computer. It was titled “One Leaf Loose” and put together under the pre-existing ’studio’ name of Flatfilms. During 2006, Jeremy agreed to join him as a co-director and business partner, setting up the small animation studio Rhubarb Zoo, their first animated effort to be released was a 10 minute short film entitled "Ectype’s End" animated with a digital combination of photography and hand drawn art.
Dane graduated from The Freelance Animation school at the end of 2006, winning best 2D animated project of the year for entropy.
