Hilarious, blasphemous, and thought-provoking.

Outrage is a perfectly acceptable motivation for making a film. Just look at the career of Michael Moore, especially his mad-as-hell Fahrenheit 9/11. Rage can be illuminating – not only about the filmmaker, but about the subject that’s made him or her angry.
That’s where Patrick Boivin was coming from when he made Condoms are bad? In March 2009, the pope made some controversial comments about condoms, telling a group of reporters following him in AIDS-ravaged Africa that the epidemic “cannot be overcome by money alone, and cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems.” Boivin’s response is Condoms are bad?, an animated short (very short) that manages to be hilarious, blasphemous, and thought-provoking all at the same time.
How blasphemous? We see Jesus karate-kick the pope before doing a miracle job on a condom, raising it over his head and making it glow like a halo. With a closing title card that says, “Don’t be stupid, protect yourself,” Condoms are bad? is the hippest, sanest service announcement around. I think teachers should play this in sex education classes.
