Stirring and frankly quite patriotic.

"Our boys got a raw deal when they came back from Vietnam," an aging World War II veteran says in THE WAY WE GET BY, a poignant and lovingly constructed documentary by Aron Gaudet. The documentary, which works successfully on several levels, follows a group of "troop greeters" who do their volunteer work at the Bangor, Maine airport. This airport...

A very revealing and telling history.

Tyson (2008) is a very revealing and telling history of Mike Tyson's life told by Tyson himself. He talks through his childhood up to current day in a very open and candid manner. The filmmaker (James Toback) did a perfect job of letting him tell his story without coaxing or slanting the film to any side; it is simply Mike's story. Most of the ...

Thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining.

EVERY LITTLE STEP, by directors Adam Del Deo and James D. Stern, is a documentary that follows people auditioning for a musical about people auditioning for a musical. So does the mere description of this documentary about people auditioning to get parts of the Broadway revival of "A Chorus Line" have your heading spinning? Well, don't worry. ...

Dynamic, groundbreaking.

Ari Folman's Waltz with Bashir is an extraordinary documentary that choricles the experiences of several young Israeli soldiers during the 1982 Lebanon War. Save for the shocking archival footage that serves as Folman's chilling coda, the film has been animated in dynamic, groundbreaking style. There's a fluidity and coherence to the war scenes that...

__domel__body => '
This airport, being the eastern most one in the country, has the largest number of arrivals and departures of troops fighting the Iraq War.

The film can be appreciated on at least three levels. First, and most obvious, it follows troop greeters and shows the dedication of these octogenarians and nonagenarians who go out in the middle of freezing cold Maine nights to say hello or goodbye to the American troops who bravely fight for us.

Eschewing politics, the film rarely touches on whether the Iraq War was a good idea or not. Instead, it takes it as a given that our soldiers are there, so the question is how best should we honor them. And, even though it doesn't wear its politics on its sleeve, it is quite a patriotic picture.

The film works on a second level, of course, in showing how much the soldiers appreciate the dedication and sincerity of the troop greeters and how they feel about their mission in the Armed Services of our country. The greeters are there to do more than shake hands and express their appreciation. They are also there to offer support, however they can, from free cell phone usage to being someone the soldiers can talk to. The boundless goodwill and honest generosity of the greeters is palpable.

The final and ultimately the deepest level of the movie is its examination of the lives of the aging veterans of World War II and of the almost forgotten Korean War. Some of them are coping okay logistically and emotionally. But the one who provokes the strongest outpouring of sympathy from the audience is a guy who lives in squalor. Literally bankrupting himself feeding his very large brood of cats, his lack of financial sense is matched by his inability to cope with the upkeep of his house. Easily the saddest scene in the documentary for me was watching him walk on the floor of his house which was covered in hundreds of empty cat food cans.

But mainly the movie is an upbeat one with stirring and frankly quite patriotic images of old soldiers holding up signs such as "Welcome Home Heroes!" to greet the young warriors returning home from the battlefield.

Although the greeters realize that their time on this earth is coming to a close, they approach their mortality with a positive attitude and a good dose of humor. "Everybody's got to die sometime," one vet says with an infectiously happy grin. "Nobody got out of this world alive yet."

THE WAY WE GET BY runs 1:24. The film is not yet rated but would probably be rated G and would be acceptable for all ages.
'

Most of the film is of him sitting on the couch or outside his home describing his life from his perspective. It is intertwined with some really great fight footage along with film and photographs from Tyson's younger days.

I have a new respect for him as a boxer after watching this. I was much too young to understand his accomplishments when he was in his prime. He didn't do anything to alleviate my opinion of him personally from his later years, even making me like him less. Even still, I am glad to have a record of who he really is. The film will give you new insight (good and bad) into his mind and life.

8 out of 10 - Rated R - A no frills history of Mike Tyson; albeit remarkably insightful and captivating. Everyone should see this for the boxing history and to learn more about the life of a very intriguing man.
'

So does the mere description of this documentary about people auditioning to get parts of the Broadway revival of "A Chorus Line" have your heading spinning?

Well, don't worry. EVERY LITTLE STEP won't leave your head spinning for long, since it's a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining film that will captivate your head and your heart, especially the latter.

The film works marvelously well on two separate levels. In addition to the obvious part of following the dancers through their trials and tribulations, their joys and their heartbreaks, the movie is riveting in the background material it provides about how "A Chorus Line" was first conceived and developed. Think of EVERY LITTLE STEP as "So You Think You Can Dance?" as The History Channel might produce it. And, speaking of "So You Think You Can Dance?", Tyce DiOrio from that dance competition show -- where he was first a contestant and is now a choreographer -- is one of the dancers who is seen auditioning in EVERY LITTLE STEP.

"A Chorus Line" was originally conceived in 1974 by choreographer Michael Bennett when he got a group of dancers together to talk about their lives and dreams. He made a long series of audio tapes of these discussions, and, from these tapes, he came up with the musical about auditioning for a musical. As we watch an old reel-to-reel tape player spin, we get to hear selections from the original tapes. The editor, thankfully, knows just how much of this to use, since watching a tape whirl can be deadly dull if overdone, which it never is in EVERY LITTLE STEP.

While the background story about the original concept of "A Chorus Line" is consistently fascinating, as is the old, poor quality film footage of the original production, it isn't the best part of EVERY LITTLE STEP. What really makes the film come alive are the auditions, as we observe three thousand dancers answer an open call for a 2006 Broadway revival of the famous musical.

If you've ever tried out for a part or interviewed for any job you wanted really, really bad, then EVERY LITTLE STEP will speak to you directly. As the number of people competing for each role gets reduced, you'll soon feel like every dancer has become your best friend, and you'll be rooting for them all to get the part, even though, logically, you know that many will still have to be cut. By the "final, final call back," you'll be on pins and needles worrying about who among your newfound friends will have to go.

But, as sorry as you'll be when people aren't picked, you be overjoyed with those who are. Don't be surprised if you, too, shed a tear or two along with the dancers when they are picked for the role of a lifetime. It's that kind of film. It really gets to you, in a good way.

EVERY LITTLE STEP runs 1:36. It is rated PG-13 for "some strong language including sexual references" and would be acceptable for kids around 9 and up.
'

__domel__body => '
There's a fluidity and coherence to the war scenes that would have been much more difficult to capture in live action, and the visual style gives the film a surreal, haunted quality. The lead is Folman himself (the film is based on his real-life experiences), seen both as the filmmaker as he is today and as a 19-year-old member of the IDF who hadn't even started shaving when he touched down in Lebanon. There are poetic, Thin Red Line-style images amid the carnage, such as the opening shots of 26 dogs hurtling along a street, and later a group of soldiers emerging naked from the sea. The story follows the filmmaker as he tries to remember what part he played in the Sabra and Shatila massacre. His personal journey becomes a powerful univeral statement on how the dead never stay buried. Folman's Golden Globes acceptance speech is worth noting: "I wanna dedicate this prize to the eight beautiful production babies who were born in our tiny studio in Tel Aviv during the making of Waltz with Bashir. And I hope one day when they grow up they watch this film together, and the war they see in the film will look to them like an ancient video game that has nothing to do with their lives whatsoever."
'
