__domel__body => '
This is a music video for "Get Up and Go," a catchy tune by the U.K. rock band Broadcast 2000. It was created by Vancouver Film School student Jordan Clarke. Judging by this video, he’ll be making big-budget commercials for a living.

There’s no story, just kids doing flips and jumping around with green balloons. Green is the operative color here. It stands out in the film's otherwise black-and-white cinematography (except for a brief burst of sunlight). The pacing is extraordinary; shot-for-shot, it matches the music perfectly.

This movie makes me want to eat Skittles. Like I said, this guy is going to be making commercials one day.
'

__domel__body => '
Working Title is all about isolation, specifically the isolation of a teenage girl on a movie set. The first time we see her, she’s sitting alone on a bench in a secluded area. The only other people around are the director and the script supervisor, who are dressed all in black. They appear to be very far away, as if they exist on a different plane. The visuals serve to further isolate the girl; more than once, we see her in black-and-white while the background remains in color.

Working Title reminds me of Living in Oblivion, Tom DiCillo's hilarious expose of independent filmmaking. Anyone who’s had the experience of working on an independent film will identify with the girl's frustration. (She complains about her lines not having any motivation, which is something I’ve definitely heard before – about my own scripts!) But overall the tone of the film is serious… and seriously spooky.

The work of David Lynch (Twin Peaks, Wild at Heart) clearly influenced the story and style of this film. The images often move backwards, just like the Red Room scenes in Twin Peaks. The director calls for makeup so many times that the girl ends up looking a little like Diane Ladd’s character in Wild at Heart. In one of that film’s most disturbing scenes, Ladd smears lipstick all over her face.

The camera filters used here give the entire picture a dreamlike quality. The color scheme is unusually disciplined for a student film, limited to greens, reds, blacks and the blue of the girl's dress.
'

__domel__body => '
Robert W. Filion’s See the Dead is a stylishly filmed and satisfying zombie flick. It has spectacular makeup effects and one of the most fucked-up car accidents I've ever seen in a movie.

Sarah (played by Vanelle) lives in the ‘burbs. One day she wakes up from a bad dream and opens her front door. Outside there’s a strangely purple sky and a neighborhood populated by walking corpses. Filion has put a lot of effort into the look of the zombies. They have flayed, peeling skin and blood that comes out looking all watery. The visual FX create a rich atmosphere of dread. The suspense reaches a fever pitch in a bravura shot that shows Sarah running down the street as zombies enter the frame from both sides.

Zombies always make for good social commentary, and Filion doesn't hesitate to show us wide shots of identical houses and dead-looking neighbors. Stick around after the end credits for an amusing shot of a zombie stumbling down a driveway. He's carrying a briefcase and appears to be on his way to work.
'

The title character is a violent punk in clown makeup with knife scars that slit his mouth into a creepy grin. Sound familiar?

Of course, there are other references. Rudolph and his merry band of pranksters go around terrorizing people like Alex and his droogs in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. There's also something about the way these beautiful, disaffected young people relate to each other that brings to mind the films of Gregg Araki, especially his apocalyptic Doom Generation.

The movie is visually arresting from its opening shot, when director Adam Stephenson shows us Rudolph from behind, his head framed against a magic-hour sky. The electro soundtrack really kicks things up a notch about 90 seconds in. The director keeps the action ultra-stylish with shock cuts and skewed framing choices. This video is a lot of fun.

'

__domel__body => '
Honda The Dream Comes True tells the true-life story of Soichiro Honda, who founded the Honda Motor Company and was once described by People magazine as the Japanese Henry Ford. But all of that came later. The film focuses on Soichiro’s early days as an artist and bicycle repair boy.

You might want to know this going in: this animated movie is essentially a commercial for a car company. I’m here to review the art, not the way the art has been put to use. And judged purely on artistic terms, Honda The Dream Comes True offers conjures up a series of beautiful, dreamlike images.

The narrator is Soichiro’s childhood friend. When the boys ride their bicycles up a hill, the camera switches to Soichiro’s POV, so we see the subsequent wipeout through his eyes. The central event of the film – and of Soichiro’s life, apparently – is “that magical night when an idea illuminated his mind.” From this point on, the action takes on the surreal logic of a dream. A few images stand out: the color of the moonlight, Soichiro’s glasses with their rectangular-shaped frames, and the white uniforms of the workers.

My advice is to ignore the corporate tie-in. Instead, you should take the film's images – and its message about following your dreams – to heart.
'

__domel__body => '
Redite is an art film directed by Patrick Boivin. Not only is it an experimental work, but it’s also a *developmental* work as well. It isn’t as confident or mature as later works like Radio and This and everything else. You can see Boivin sharpening his skills here.

But early Boivin is still fascinating stuff. Possibly inspired by Carl Theodor Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc, the film is completely silent, with flickery, sepia-toned mise-en-scene. We’re on an island. A lifelike marionette (Marjorie Rheaume, in a transfixing performance) wakes up, apparently having been thrown out with the trash. She discovers that her strings are attached to three wooden boards. She struggles to lift the boards over her head to free herself. After she does, a godlike hand reaches down from the sky and pins some sort of symbol to her chest.

Obviously, this one is open to interpretation. But what’s clear is that Boivin is a major talent.
'
