__domel__body => '
I love me some amusements parks. Kids today may have things I didn’t have when I was their age – iPods, the Internet, videogames that look like virtual reality displays compared to my Nintendo – but they have far fewer amusement parks. No amount of simulated experiences can beat the old-fashioned real-life thrill of throwing up on a rollercoaster. (Nostalgic types who miss such experiences could do worse than checking out Greg Motola’s pitch-perfect ADVENTURELAND.)

Watching FUN FACTORY also made me a little nostalgic. Specifically for Joyland, the rickety old amusement park I frequented as a tween. Get this: It actually had a rollercoaster made out of wood. Talk about living on the edge!

The park in FUN FACTORY also looks a little dangerous. The Ferris wheel is run by a dumpy little guy with an egg-shaped head and a mouthful of gapped teeth who likes to turn the ride on and off. In real life this would inevitably result in a breakdown, which is exactly what happens. It would also put lives in danger, which is also what happens. For a stylized animated film filled with dumpy little people, FUN FACTORY sure has a lot of verisimilitude.

The video is fun, fast and appropriate for all ages. I mean ALL ages – if I was 2 I’d be mesmerized by all those weird little people and all those bright colors. I think that’s one of the things I miss most about amusement parks: all the pretty colors.
'

__domel__body => '
This is one of Captain D’s most thorough debunks. (Before I say anything else nice about the guy, I should say that we’re friends.) He’s gained quite a following in the skeptic community, and 3 Men and a Baby Ghost Debunk is a good reason why.

The video debunks a famous Hollywood myth: that there’s a ghost in the hit ‘80s comedy 3 Men and a Baby. I haven’t seen the movie since I was a kid and only heard about the ghost after the fact, so luckily Captain D (thanks to the fair use clause) was able to show the scene in question. Legend has it the scene was shot in an apartment where a young boy committed suicide. Of course, that’s not true – the scene was shot on a soundstage in Toronto. And the “ghost” isn’t a boy at all but actually a cardboard cutout of Ted Danson. (Now THAT’S scary!)

These are revelations that have been made before, but it’s nice to have it all laid out in a video, and Captain D makes the case in graphic, irrefutable terms. The video has been made with a lot of humor and wit – two of the best things about this series of Web videos. So… the check’s in the mail, right? I kid, I kid.
'

It’s like the short, stop-motion version of Bridge to Terabithia.

Nominated for Best Animated Film at the 2007 YoungCuts Film Festival, the film is about a dream a little girl has about her deceased brother. In the dream, she’s wandering in the woods when she’s visited by her brother’s ghost. The siblings play a game, and when they touch, his hand fades away.

The movie is a poignant story about coping and loss; with each passing year, the brother literally fades from view. The design of the characters (as well as the score) gives the film the feel of a mythic Native American story.
'

__domel__body => '
Accepted into a number of film festivals, including the Manukau Film Festival and the Krok International Animation Film Festival, Entropy is a marvelous animated film about a girl who takes a trip to the moon.

She’s carried there by the wind. She looks longingly at the half-moon from a hilltop, and simply floats there like a human kite. She meets a magician who can make stars glow. What they’re able to do together can only be described as magical. The moment he leaves her – with their hands separated unwillingly – is cinematically thrilling. The movie ends poignantly, with the credits played over a Disney-style ballad.

This has all been richly imagined and designed by Kiwi animator Dane Jacobs, who wrote, directed and even composed the score. The characters are distinctly drawn with diamond-shaped faces. There are sights on the moon (especially those bubble-encased stars) that will take your breath away. The color palette of blues, yellows and greens is lovely. The costume and hair design is crazy cool. This is the work of a genuine artist.

To support this Kiwi visionary, visit rhubarbzoo.com
'

__domel__body => '
Directed by Cara Antonelli, The Clocktower is a dreamy and beautifully animated student film about a tiny dancer. The movie is about finding your place in the world, though I’m not sure it contains a message that values curiosity and individualism.

The look of the film is like Pixar’s Up crossed with Dr. Seuss. Brightly colored balloons float past slanted rooftops, heading toward a big blue sky that’s etched with mysterious spiral shapes. In a clocktower, a petite girl dances gracefully. She becomes curious about what’s going on outside the clocktower, and when she stops dancing, the balloons stop in midair and the world turns gray. She discovers that she and she alone has the power to make things go back to normal.

Again, the theme of “learning your place” is somewhat troubling, but visually the film is aces. The sound design could have been more intricate; the lack of ambient sound when the girl comes out of the clocktower is especially jarring. Also, the theme font chosen for the credits is a little cheesy. You may not think that’s important, but too many filmmakers just slap a font on carelessly without stopping to consider how it affects the tone of the overall piece.

But I’m picking on The Clocktower. This is a very appealing short and it’s appropriate for all ages.
'

__domel__body => '
Veni Vidi Vici is a classic underdog tale told in an efficient three-act structure. It’s bright, colorful and immensely endearing.

The animated movie is set in ancient Rome. The hero wants to be a Roman guard, so he goes to an open tryout. The only problem is that he’s about three feet shorter than everyone else. His competitors all look alike, and they’re in the same brutal tradition as the guards in Caligula and The Passion of the Christ. The hero, on the other hand, looks like a lovable Warner Bros. cartoon character. Who would you want to win?

Like all underdog tales, the hero fails at first, but with some good-old-fashioned luck and persistence he ultimately triumphs. (“Gonna need a montage!”) The movie has a charming tone, and most of the gags work. What's missing is a sidekick for this little guy. I guess that'll have to wait for the sequel.
'

Both are clearly the works of a major artist with a unique voice.

Papiroflexia concerns a practitioner of origami, the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. Most of the objects in his apartment are made out of paper, including his cat. He resolves to do something about all the noisy in the city he lives in. He folds cars into antelope, planes into birds, and ultimately the entire city into wilderness.

The film seems to be pushing a back-to-the-earth anarchist philosophy, but it doesn't shove it down your throat or anything. The exquisite score (by Nick Fevola) and Baldwin's pastel-colored animation lend the film a gentle, strangely comforting quality. This is a wonderful movie, one whose story and style would do anime master Hayao Miyazaki proud.
'
