There’s something classical about the framing and editing choices.

The Christmas lights that illuminate the street at night, the blown-out white backgrounds, the neon signs and slow-motion shots – it’s all enough to make me want to eat this movie up. The girl in the red dress (played by Erica Sherwood) doesn’t hurt, either. There’s no real plot; we see her being stalked by a sinister off-screen presence. There’s something classical about the framing and editing choices. She could be a De Palma heroine as she scurries down the street – Angie Dickinson being chased by Michael Caine in drag in Dressed to Kill.

A word of advice to young filmmakers: avoid meaningless parentheses in your titles. The makers of 500 Days of Summer made the same mistake. You see what I just did there? I ignored the parentheses.
'

It looks like a disaster movie, but it doesn’t resort to the over-the-top ridiculousness of Roland Emerich’s 2012. Thank God.

The images fly by in a white heat. We see an asteroid hurtling toward Earth, sirens, a news report, and a group of friends trying to stay warm as the temperature plummets – all in the span of about 20 seconds. We then see a series of shots that communicate the increasingly desperate nature of the situation: candles in the dark, clouds blotting out the moon, the temperature dropping, etc. The director, Juan Pennisi, is a rigorous collector of images. He’s a genuine talent – a budding young artist honing his craft. The actors are all beautiful but not in a “One Tree Hill” kind of way; they look like people we can identify with and relate to.

Obviously, I’m excited to see the whole film. I’m a little shocked that this is Pennisi’s first short film – it looks like the work of a seasoned professional.
'

__domel__body => '
This is a hilarious spoof of 28 DAYS LATER, starring Nick Swardson. I first became familiar with Swardson’s work while watching “Reno 911!,” where he played the gayer-than-gay street whore Terry Bernadino. Here, he plays a guy who drinks 28 shots in one night and wakes up in a nightmarish world where all his friends are drunken zombies and everyone pukes on each other. In other words, a regular Saturday night for most people, har dee har.

The video has amazing production value, and I’m pretty sure Chris Evans makes a cameo appearance – he’s the star of FANTASTIC FOUR and SUNSHINE – as “Chris”. The filmmakers brilliantly ape the music and editing style of 28 DAYS, even using the same font for the titles.

But the main attraction is Swardson, who’s utterly hilarious. This video has me excited to see his new DVD – “Seriously, Who Farted?” Pretty sophisticated, eh?
'

He’s gained quite a following in the skeptic community, and 3 Men and a Baby Ghost Debunk is a good reason why.

The video debunks a famous Hollywood myth: that there’s a ghost in the hit ‘80s comedy 3 Men and a Baby. I haven’t seen the movie since I was a kid and only heard about the ghost after the fact, so luckily Captain D (thanks to the fair use clause) was able to show the scene in question. Legend has it the scene was shot in an apartment where a young boy committed suicide. Of course, that’s not true – the scene was shot on a soundstage in Toronto. And the “ghost” isn’t a boy at all but actually a cardboard cutout of Ted Danson. (Now THAT’S scary!)

These are revelations that have been made before, but it’s nice to have it all laid out in a video, and Captain D makes the case in graphic, irrefutable terms. The video has been made with a lot of humor and wit – two of the best things about this series of Web videos. So… the check’s in the mail, right? I kid, I kid.
'

__domel__body => '
36 Stairs is the new live-action short from director Grzegorz Jonkajtys, the award-winning creator of Ark and Legacy. Viewers of those mini-masterworks know that Jonkajtys is an exceptional storyteller and a talented animator. For the first time, he’s using those gifts to make a life-action movie, and the results are nothing short of jaw-dropping.

The actual film won’t be released until early 2010. What we have here is a 75-second teaser. It provides a few tantalizing clues as to what the story is about, while fleshing out the film’s visual extravagance and dystopian, futuristic setting.

I’m assuming this is a “virtual backlot” movie, like SIN CITY and SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW. Instead of being physically constructed, the movie’s “sets” have been digitally rendered on a computer. This mix of real actors and fake sets can be distracting in films like the STAR WARS prequels, but with other filmmakers the virtual backlot is a godsend – it lets their imaginations run wild. Jonkajtys is a case in point.

The film stars Rodrigo Lopresti as Jeffrey Brief, a tragic Everyman in a world where humans depend on bio-mechanical alterations to withstand the deteriorating climate. We see a few of these alterations in the trailer, first an organic-looking respirator and later a phone that appears to be physically attached to Jeffrey’s hand. In part, the film looks to be a biological horror movie, like David Cronenberg’s VIDEODROME. Like that 1983 sci-fi masterpiece, 36 Stairs appears to be exploring how technology can overtake our lives and destroy us.

Many shots in the trailer establish the frightening world Jeffrey lives in. A scene in a hallway, with rows and rows of lockers standing sentinel while Jeffrey is backlit by a blinding light source, has the feel of a bureaucratic nightmare – like something out of Orson Welles’s THE TRIAL or Terry Gilliam’s BRAZIL. The central scene shows Jeffrey making a desperate phone call to his health insurance provider. The automated voice on the other end of the line tells him, “I’m sorry, this number is invalid.” It all feels insanely timely.

The attention to detail in the wide cityscape shots would do sci-fi heavy-hitters like Ridley Scott and James Cameron proud. In fact, forget AVATAR. This is the science-fiction movie I want to see.

'

__domel__body => '
A Change of Season is an environmental disaster movie. Some of the acting falls flat – always a challenge when working with a young cast – but the storytelling and visuals make for it. This is one super-cool sci-fi flick.

The premise is worthy of a Twilight Zone episode. We open in a classroom filled with young kids as the teacher discusses photosynthesis. Two of the kids, Adam and Lily, get held back as the rest break for recess. So far so good – nothing out of the ordinary. Then we see the kids going outside, and wearing eerie oxygen masks. The air is smoky and the ground is ashen. This is a world where people can’t breathe outside!

The rest of the movie is told with the confidence of a superbly distilled short story. Adam and Lily become fast friends. They’re fascinated with the idea of world with trees where people can see the stars. They try to plant a tree on the school grounds. But the experiment fails, and Lily becomes distraught.

Again, the acting isn’t the best. There’s a key scene in which the ambient sound is way too loud and it’s difficult to hear the dialogue. But mostly this is an absorbing viewing experience. The visuals – the art on display in the school, the framing choices and the spectacular special effect that makes the climax so satisfying – are really something to see.
'

__domel__body => '
This is a teaser for Deep River, an upcoming Web series about working-class people caught up in extraordinary circumstances. (Think Scott Frank's The Lookout and Steven Soderbergh's Bubble.) It’s less of a teaser than a titillating sneak peek, showing us one long scene that introduces us to two characters, Edward and Roxy.

The scene takes place in the parking lot of a strip club. Roxy is chatty and looks like she's just spent the last several hours giving table-dances. Edward has a thousand-yard stare and looks like he's been up all night hatching a get-rich-quick scheme. The couple has been evicted, and Edward has come up with a plan that will "pay a year's rent in a night's work."

Series creators Adam Stephenson (Cyberpunks, Rudolph) and Jason Lupish put us unambiguously on Roxy's side. She's beautifully backlit and delivers many of her lines in medium close-ups. Edward is never seen speaking alone on camera; the camera either stays on Roxy or shows both of them in two-shot. This editorial approach is not without its pitfalls. The girl is a much better actor – the part where she talks about how her "life is shit" is a highlight – and so we start to wonder if the editing is there to compensate for weak acting. When Edward blows up in her face, the camera cuts to two shots outside the car. This makes him less terrifying because we never actually see him getting angry.

The beautiful title card shot significantly opens up the visual possibilities for this series. It looks like a very modern, up-to-date story – very in touch with the economic anxieties of the day.
'

__domel__body => '
Easier on the eyes than most Minor Prophets efforts, America’s Game is distinguished by Steve Portland’s syrupy score. It just about drips with super-patriotism – think of John Williams’s scores for Saving Private and Band of Brothers. It captures the satirical tone the Prophets are going for here.

The hero looks like one of those hawks who scream the loudest for the wars even though they never bothered to serve themselves. (The film is a subtle attack on the Bush administration, as evidenced by the double meaning of its tagline: “Someone has stolen home.”) He’s played by Gil Damon, who delivers most of his lines off-screen in a hilarious voice-over. (Note: I’m aware that Damon has a rather large following in the gay community. His fans will be happy to know that his hairy chest is displayed at length in all its glory.)

Suffering from osteoporosis, the hero goes out to the local ballpark and watches some kids play a game of baseball. He just about weeps at the apple-pie wholesomeness of it all, but his sentimental views are undermined when he gets knocked unconscious and robbed.

Damon’s voiceover reminded me of those Pepperidge Farm commercials that both Family Guy and Futurama have made fun of. He recounts how baseball is the only original American sport, and notes that Lacrosse was stolen from "the Injuns" and football is "just a gay version of rugby." I just about fell out of my chair laughing when he talked about savoring "the smell of the hot nuts and the rosin bags." Director Derek Frey cleverly splices in such hallowed symbols of freedom as the American bald eagle and Hulk Hogan. But, unlike some anime, the Polish filmmaker tells universal stories. The award winning Ark is a good example: a universal story that, over the course of seven concise minutes, becomes almost Biblical.

The film is a set in a future world where much of humanity has been wiped out by an unnamed virus. The survivors set out to find a new, unpolluted place to live. The man in charge learns that he’s contracted the virus. He decides there’s only one thing left to do: kill himself, thus preventing the disease from spreading.

The artistry of Ark will take your breath away. The opening scene on the harbor looks like it belongs in the Museum of Modern Art. Once the film moves inside the ship, there are some amazing sights. The detail of all the gadgets and controls is simply jaw-dropping. My favorite set piece is the sleeping quarters where all the survivors stay. It reminded me of the shocking living conditions of the poor in Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York. Go ahead and gawk at Ark.
'
