Brooklynites struggle with drug addiction.

One of the best films of the decade.

Darren Aranofsky’s Requiem for a Dream is one of the best films of the decade. Rarely has a young American filmmaker (Aronofsky was 31 when it came out) used cinematic language to delve so deeply and effectively into the minds of his characters. It’s based on the novel by Hubert Selby Jr., an author that Aronofsky started reading as a young Brooklynite because one of Selby’s books, Last Exit to Brooklyn, had the word “Brooklyn” in it. Requiem is the story of the Goldfarb family, son Harry (Jared Leto) and mother Sara (Ellen Burstyn), and the drug addictions that destroy them. If that sounds like a bummer, it is. It’s also electrifying. If The Fountain is the film where Aronofsky started tinkering too much and The Wrestler is the film where he loosened up stylistically, then Requiem is the one where his perfectionism served him well. Every composition is just right. Clint Mansell’s unforgettable score makes even the most hard-to-watch scenes cinematically thrilling. As the characters descend further into the hell, the movie takes on the dimensions of genuine, unspeakable tragedy. I especially admire the bravery of Jennifer Connelly’s naked (in more ways than one) performance as Harry’s girlfriend, and what Aronosky and Burstyn have achieved together. Only a truly great director and a truly great actor could make the act of watching television so terrifying.
