Having never seen an episode of Star Trek in my life I was VERY happy when it occurred to me that I actually knew what the fuck was going on. Being an origin story as well as an alternate reality, prior knowledge is completely unnecessary. What also hit me was the degree of the acting. I mean, I thought Chris Pine would suck but he turned out being the best thing about the movie. Despite that, I think that Simon Pegg and Eric Bana should have had more screen time, Bana in particular because his character isn't really fleshed out. He comes off as just a really angry guy with face tattoos. Action comes in spades as do very nice special effects, but when all is said and done, it all seems a bit unfulfilling.
