His magic vial of director mojo ran out.

If there were doubts that Shyamalan has lost his touch and that his career is pretty much dead in the water, The Happening has effectively stamped such doubts from the minds of non believers everywhere. Shyamalan may have at one point been a competent director but it seems that by the time The Village came around, his magic vial of director mojo ran out. I mean, everybody in this movie does such a shit job of acting. So shitty in fact, that it becomes glaringly obvious that Shyamalan instructed all of his actors to act like amateurs, for what reason we may never know. Proof of this is the leading guy, Mark Wahlberg. Anybody who's seen The Departed knows that he's a very capable actor and how he got himself into this mess of a movie, I can only guess. It gets worse from here, I'm afraid. Whoever decided that it would be a good idea to let Shyamalan screenwrite his own movies should be ashamed. The freaking dialogue is cringe worthy. Every time somebody opens their mouth you simultaneously want to laugh, cry and stab yourself in the neck repeatedly until dead. Speaking of neck stabbings, the one thing The Happening has going for it is its interesting concept. The opening scenes featuring mass suicides almost trick you into thinking that you’re watching a quality movie. By the time you find out that the world’s plant life is conspiring (yes, conspiring) to end the human race by releasing a deadly toxin into the air, you yourself will be seeking the most convenient way to off yourself.
