Veni Vidi Vici is a short animation telling the story of a little Roman Legionnaire and his attempts to overcome his physical shortcomings and get ahead in the Roman army, using cunning and smart techniques instead of brute strength to prove himself.

Bright, colorful and immensely endearing.

Veni Vidi Vici is a classic underdog tale told in an efficient three-act structure. It’s bright, colorful and immensely endearing.

The animated movie is set in ancient Rome. The hero wants to be a Roman guard, so he goes to an open tryout. The only problem is that he’s about three feet shorter than everyone else. His competitors all look alike, and they’re in the same brutal tradition as the guards in Caligula and The Passion of the Christ. The hero, on the other hand, looks like a lovable Warner Bros. cartoon character. Who would you want to win?

Like all underdog tales, the hero fails at first, but with some good-old-fashioned luck and persistence he ultimately triumphs. (“Gonna need a montage!”) The movie has a charming tone, and most of the gags work. What's missing is a sidekick for this little guy. I guess that'll have to wait for the sequel.
