Ball State's visual communication (graphic design) program prepares students to be designers of information, which in a broad sense covers everything about our environment: the spaces in which people live and work, the products they purchase, and the messages they send. Visual communication requires attention to detail and cultural awareness. Design education is more than learning technical skills.

Our curriculum develops the student's skills, perceptions, and problem-solving abilities. Visual communication students work with professors to thoughtfully edit and revise their work for presentation and to coalesce their personal growth in creating their unique portfolios. All of these activities are important parts of "real-world" performance.

Through this self-contributing, collaborative effort, students understand and value their work, attain a sense of responsibility for their performance, and achieve ownership of their new abilities. All of these are valuable characteristics for entering their chosen profession.

The visual communication program maintains a policy of selective enrollment. Admission to the visual communication sequence requires a review at the end of the spring term.

Students studying electronic art and animation at Ball State work in numerous forms of digital art including computer animation, intermedia, digital video, digital imaging, installation, interactive art, and Internet-based projects. Students also participate in several hands-on and collaborative interdisciplinary projects, interacting with students in other courses of study.

Prepare for a cutting-edge career in multimedia design and production by examining the theory behind the technology, mastering the art of creating content for traditional and emerging media, and learning how to create interactive products, such as DVDs, Web sites, and CD-ROMs.

Prepare for a cutting-edge career in multimedia design and production by examining the theory behind the technology, mastering the art of creating content for traditional and emerging media, and learning how to create interactive products, such as DVDs, Web sites, and CD-ROMs.

This option is for all you budding filmmakers as well as those interested in computer-based production. Get ready for a fast-paced career in audio, video, entertainment, and/or film. You can create TV programming by getting involved in one of our nine student-run TV shows or learn how to mix a sound recording for radio or movie soundtracks.

The complex relationship between visual media and society has always made the study of film and television a great way to sharpen your cultural awareness and critical thinking skills. The digital revolution has made that study even more compelling.

Unlike the other telecommunications major options, which are hands on and real-product oriented, the film and television studies option is the scholarly study of film and TV. It is contemplative and analytical—perfect for a person who wants to go into law, especially media law, but not for someone who is a future filmmaker or news anchor.
