The Music Department at Columbia College Chicago offers the Master of Fine Arts degree in Music Composition for the Screen (MFA, 54 hrs).
This program will offer one of the nation's few advanced degrees in music scoring for film, television and other visual media. It is recognized as a genuine point of entry to this highly competitive field. In an industry whose key figures are increasingly culled from post-graduate ranks, composers must be expected to have undergone the same kind of rigorous training as the directors, writers and actors with whom they will collaborate. An interdisciplinary curriculum drawing upon five academic departments (Music, Film/Video, Audio Arts & Acoustics, Theater and Television) will provide instruction and mentoring at the highest professional level, and project-based interaction with students in other areas of the dramatic arts will encourage the cooperative spirit that is the hallmark of great screen composers.
The final semester in Los Angeles will offer students a real-world experience in the creative, technical and business areas of the craft by way of their thesis scores and direct exposure to professionals through industry internships.
